The Ancient Science of Astrology
Astrology means "the study of the stars." It is an ancient science
that elucidates the laws by which the universe is governed and teaches
us how to apply those laws to our lives. Astronomy originated with the
Egyptians and was greatly refined by the Greeks, who added to it their
learning in astronomy and mathematics.
The stars and planets move in cyclical patterns and human life on earth
is interconnected with those movements. Astrologers observe the position
of the heavenly bodies at the moment of our birth and study the qualities
of those bodies (their life forces, their interrelationship) to explain
how they influence human affairs and terrestrial events. The sun, the
moon, and the planets each represent specific aspects of who we are and
how we live, such as the degree of our vitality (shown by the sun), our
emotions (the moon), our rational self (Mercury), and our aesthetic sense
(Venus), to give a few examples.
The astrological calendar is in the form of a circle divided into twelve
segments of thirty degrees each. The segments make up the twelve signs
of the zodiac, each one represented by a specific creature, person, or
other symbol such as Aries the Ram, Taurus the Bull, and so on. Those
signs rule given years in conjunction with the four primal elements: fire,
earth, air, and water. Each astrological sign is governed by a planet
which is associated with specific universal themes and principles. Thus
the date and time of our birth is associated with a particular planetary
configuration, which then influences our personalities and lives.
The Healing Energy of Gemstones
and Crystals
These astrological principles influence not only the heavenly bodies and
human life on earth, but the mineral kingdom as well, so that each gem
and crystal has specific qualities derived from the movement of the universe.
Astrology is an elegant way of investigating the themes and challenges
that compose our life design. We can learn to live up to our fullest potential
while opening up to the governing principles of the universe.
A life force called the auric field radiates out from the body. This energy
field can be seen as an aura of color around the body by means of Kirlian
photography and also by some clairvoyants. The auric field is used in
alternative medicine as a diagnostic device to discover where the life
force is compromised. By wearing the right gemstone on our body, within
our auric field, we can raise our consciousness and balance our energy
field.
Gemstones and crystals possess abundant energy that is always available
to us. When we understand their qualities and healing aspects, we can
enhance their impact on us. Their forces are multiplied as they become
a focus and anchor for our unconscious mind.
Our individual and intuitive connection with the world of gemstones and
crystals comes to us through their beauty and the fascination they hold
for us. You feel drawn to a specific stone, indicating that you are in
tune with that stone's energy and that this is the right stone for you.
Your Gemstone Profile
A gemstone profile is drawn up based on your astrological chart. The profile
will indicate which stones are the most beneficial and healing for you.
Those stones should be prominent in your jewelry. If you should feel drawn
to a gem that is not in your profile, trust your intuition as your attraction
for that stone may be an indication of a transition you are going through
or a specific theme you are working on right now in your life.
GUIDE TO
YOUR GEMSTONES
In the guide that follows you
will find descriptions of the physical and metaphysical properties of
each stone that will help you understand the influence of that stone.
While there are many books about the physical healing aspects of gemstones
and crystals, our interest here is in the metaphysical aspects of the
stones that promote the growth of our spirit and soul rather than in
the impact of the stones on the physical body. If our soul and spirit
are balanced and whole they express themselves in a healthy body.
I wish you
a pleasant journey through the mysterious world of gemstones and crystals
as you enjoy God's beautiful creations.
Aquamarine (mo, me, ma, ur)
The Aquamarine, along with the Emerald, belongs to the
beryl family. It is found around the world, with the most important sources
in Brazil and Madagascar. It crystallizes in a long six-sided prism. Its
name derives from the Latin for "water of the ocean" because
of its color, which may be light blue, medium blue, or blue-green. The
most expensive and desirable color is the darkest blue.
Uranus infuses Aquamarine with some unusual qualities and a vision beyond
our usual limited mind-set. He makes Aquamarine the Rebel among the gems.
He is a Visionary fighting for a better life, supporting goodness and
necessary changes. He seeks freedom and independence and to express his
uniqueness. He is an innovator, ahead of his time in many ways. With an
open mind he is always questioning his own limiting beliefs, willing to
grow beyond them. He can help us to find our own vision and purpose in
life and the courage to live them.
This unique gem connects us with the unlimited aspect of being that is
found in the ocean, symbolizing the vastness of existence, the unlimited
space and horizon that we experience standing on a beach or on a boat.
Aquamarine also has a female aspect, represented by the Moon. The Moon
symbolizes our unconscious mind, our emotions, and our past memories.
It reflects our emotional needs and wants, our ability to give and receive.
Through its female aspect, Aquamarine supports and nourishes us, as if
with Mother's milk. Feeling full and nurtured, we are able to share from
the abundance of our own heart.
Aquamarine also sharpens our mind and our powers of discernment and helps
us tap into the collective unconscious mind with all its creative resources.
In so doing he helps us develop our intuitive creativity and objective
knowledge.
Aquamarine helps us to open and balance the throat chakra, which helps
us to express our personal truth, including our true feelings. The throat
chakra is an area where we all have many blocks; thus we often feel limited
in our self-expression.
Iron gives Aquamarine its color and energizing element. It is said to
help remediate iron deficiency. With his high energy level Aquamarine
restores equilibrium in overenergized people who are impatient, always
rushing about, overstressed, and tense. Those individuals may be at high
risk of accidents!
Aquamarine also represents Mother Mary. When we strip away 2000 years
of male Christian tradition, we discover that Mary was not only the mother
of Christ but a strong and highly evolved being in her own right and thus
a role model for us today. Her strength also relates to the tradition
of the Black Madonna that is found all over the world. The Black Madonna
stands for the destructive and creative female principle of the universe,
called Shakti in the East Indian tradition.
Thus versatile Aquamarine represents the qualities of freedom, growth,
moving beyond limitations, a sharp mind, creativity, self-expression,
and balance. Drawing on these qualities, Aquamarine helps women to grow
into a new dimension of their womanhood and helps men to balance their
own inner woman. A man who integrates these aspects of Aquamarine is able
to enter into a balanced and equal relationship with a strong woman without
fear of losing himself or his position.
Sapphire (ve,
ma, ju, sa)
The name Sapphire comes
from the Greek word for "blue." The Sapphire belongs to the
corundum family. The red variety is called Ruby and all other color
variations are called Sapphire. There are black, pink, violet, green,
yellow, and orange Sapphires. The orange variety is also called Padparadscha,
which means “Lotus flower” in Singalese, the language of
Sri Lanka. Sapphires are found in many places around the world, with
the best qualities coming from Australia, Sri Lanka, Burma, Thailand,
Kashmir, and the state of Montana.
With a hardness of 9 on the Mohs' scale, corundum is the second hardest
stone after the Diamond, making it a very durable stone and excellent
for wedding bands and a lifetime of wear. Besides the Tourmaline the
Sapphire is the only stone that occurs in all the colors of the rainbow.
Each color touches us in a different way. Sapphires are especially powerful
if different colors are set together in a piece of jewelry.
The rainbow symbolizes beauty and the treasure waiting for us at its
end. Discovering that treasure always involves a journey. At some point
in our journey we might realize that the journey itself is the goal.
The journey is always happening in the Now, and the Now is all there
is. The beautiful family of the Sapphires can help us to live in the
Now, to enjoy ourselves as we are, to make peace with ourselves and
our life.
Blue Sapphire
The Blue Sapphire varies from light blue to dark blue. The most expensive
color is cornflower blue. The coloring pigments are iron (Mars) and
titanium (Uranus). The Blue Sapphire brings us peace of mind. He helps
to relax anxiety-driven thoughts by helping us to look at situations
from a higher perspective. He helps us to find meaning in the situation
we are dealing with and to gain faith in the goodness of life.
If we can live our life from a place of trust in life, that everything
is happening for a reason and is part of a bigger plan even if we cannot
see it right now, we find peace. We can relax by putting our fears and
worries in the hands of that Higher Force, however you choose to call
it.
The Blue Sapphire also strengthens and grounds us in our activities.
He is responsible and reliable and helps us to follow through on our
commitments. He gives us the virtue of Patience.
Though we are firmly grounded on Earth, Blue Sapphire soars with us
into the unlimited heavens, opening us to higher insight, vision, and
wisdom. Innovation and inventions may flow from this new position: it
is a place of revolutionary ideas and higher ideals. Best of all, Blue
Sapphire has sufficient energy to make sure we act on those new thought
forms, bringing them to life.
Blue Sapphire is a male stone at its best. He is a healer and mentor
for our active mind.
Black Star
Sapphire
This Sapphire has a six-rayed star of reflected light moving around
its cabochon surface. The star represents Venus and Mars united, holding
hands. This Sapphire is a strong ally and teacher. His fortes are discipline,
endurance, and balance in all extremes and opposing energies. Mars and
Venus are the female and the male principles, the lover and the beloved,
the yin and yang. The Black Star Sapphire grounds those energies in
us, giving us peace and deep relaxation.
The Black Sapphire is one of the most powerful among the black stones.
He is a powerful magician. Working with the power of magnetic attraction,
Black Sapphire helps us achieve the open-minded receptivity that makes
things fall into place easily. This is a wish-fulfilling gem. With his
help we learn to become clear, focused, and receptive to the fulfillment
of our goals.
Orange-Pink
Sapphire (ve, su, me, ju)
Also called the Padparadscha,
this is a rarer and more expensive Sapphire. This very beautiful radiant
stone combines the qualities of the Pink and the Yellow Sapphire in
one stone. Because it touches the solar plexus and the heart chakra
it especially helps us to express our creative flow in accordance with
the heart. The value of an action is measured by the virtues of the
heart: unconditional love, self-love, and compassion. We are asked to
align our deeds with the heart, which gives us a deep sense of fulfillment
and love for our work.
The Padparadscha is
the wise King Arthur ruling with love and integrity. He helps us to
share a joyful presence and connection to our Higher Being, which results
in divine right action.
Beryl ( su,
me, ve, ma, ju, ne, chi)
Beryl is an amazing gemstone
that occurs in a wide variety of colors, each variety having its own
name. In addition to Emerald and Aquamarine, Beryl manifests its beauty
in gold, yellow-green, yellow, pink, and a colorless variety. These
stones come from many different places, including Brazil, the Malagasy
Republic, Namibia, Sri Lanka, and Rhodesia. Beryl crystallizes in long
hexagonal prisms. All the varieties, especially the Emerald, are very
brittle and break easily if struck.
Bixbite (su,
ma, ve, ju, ne, chi)
Bixbite is the strawberry-red
Beryl. Her orange undertone conveys a fiery yet still soft disposition.
She belongs to the sex chakra and the heart chakra. She creates a connection
between our sexual fire, our sensuality, and the softness of the heart.
She teaches us to allow our gentleness to arise, to experience sexuality
as an act of communion, melting together, riding the wave toward higher
and higher states of love and consciousness expressed and felt in our
physical body. We have permission to be as sensual and playful and sexual
as we would like to be.
Pearl (mu, sa, ne, chi)
Pearls are found in a
great variety colors, including white, cream, rose, silver, golden,
blue, and black. Pearl is an organic substance made of calcium carbonate
and an organic horn material that form as a reaction to an injury, usually
intentionally caused by humans. The Pearl forms concentrically around
the implanted microcrystal. Pearls are very sensitive to acids, perspiration,
cosmetics, hairspray, dryness, and humidity. They can die through age
or improper treatment, or they can become dull, crack, and peel off.
Pearls are sometimes referred to as the tears of the soul and some advise
against wearing them. There may well be some truth in that notion, but
the choice to wear pearls must be left to individual discretion: I feel
a strong attraction toward some pearls and appreciate wearing them from
time to time.
Pearl can be viewed as
a being originating in the depths of the ocean or fresh water seas.
Water or the ocean is a powerful symbol and representation of our unconscious
mind, the unknown depths of our emotions, the female part of our being.
The human body consists of 85% water, the mysterious ingredient essential
to all life. And science tell us that we normally use only 5 to 10%
of the potential of our brains, the conscious mind, meaning that the
majority of the brain is hidden in the vast unconscious. The significance
of the Pearl's association with deep waters, and therefore our unconscious
mind, is clear!
The Moon rules water, the ocean, the emotions, the female principle,
and our unconscious mind. The Pearl is ruled by the Moon, so she connects
us with the depths of our unconscious, of our feelings, including those
that we often seek to repress, such as grief, sorrow, and pain. We try
to avoid becoming conscious of those wounds, but we should take a lesson
from the Pearl: Pearl’s host, the shell, also suffered an injury—even
died at one point!—and yet produced this perfect, soft, shiny,
round beauty. The transformation is reminiscent of the caterpillar,
often ugly, that grows into a beautiful butterfly. And so is it with
humans: we can use our wounds like the Pearl, to grow into our own beauty.
Having this "wound"
affinity with humans, Pearl is a wonderful ally and friend to us during
our process of healing from these deep emotional injuries. She can soothe
and nourish us, bring our wounds up into the light of consciousness,
assist us in the transforming healing process.
The round shape of the
Pearl stands for perfection, oneness, and is the most balanced form
there is.
The Black Pearl, also
called Tahitian Pearl, is cultivated in the ocean and has many qualities
of Saturn. This makes her the deepest and most intense of her pearl
sisters. Thus she teaches us compassion and self-love. She makes us
aware of the limits we create for ourselves, of the armor we create
in our attempt to shield ourselves from further hurts, of loneliness
and aloneness, and of our deep commitment to life and all the inevitable
changes that life entails.
Spinel (ma,
ve, su, ne)
Spinel looks very similar
to Ruby. Historically, many stones that were thought to be Rubies have
proven to be Spinels. With a Mohs' hardness of 8 it is not as hard as
Ruby and its chemical composition is a little different, with magnesium
added to the aluminum oxide. Most Spinels that you will find in the
marketplace are red, but they also occur in yellow and blue. The primary
deposits are in Burma and Sri Lanka.
Spinel is our Lady of
the Heart. She is proud, independent, and self-sufficient. She is an
artist who expresses herself in many different ways. She complements
Ruby in his male power: she is the queen beside the king.
Spinel teaches us unconditional
love and the beauty of an open heart with no need for armor. She helps
to heal emotional trauma while connecting us with the deeper truth of
our eternal being. If we are able to get in touch with our true nature
as beings of love and perfection, we can achieve a new perspective on
difficult life events and find forgiveness in our heart. This will create
peace and harmony in our heart and soul. Spinel gives generously of
herself from her heart.
Spinel is also strong
and dares to live life according to her own truth and conscience. She
is a role model for young girls and helps them to find their own strength
as they grow up. They learn to stand out among their peers and discover
their potential as leaders rather than followers.
