Our new Medieval Line is done with an ancient technique called Chasing or Repousse, utilizing a multitude of differently shaped steel implements, called chasing tools, which are hammered with hundreds of blows into a thin sheet of gold. Imagine how you can push down into a sheet of clay and create a three-dimensional shape. The Chasing technique is very similar, but is done with much patience and many hammer blows. Using this technique you achieve a relief pattern that emerges in a unique way out of the metal. The result is a piece you might imagine having seen in a museum, as it has somewhat of a medieval quality to it. The entire process takes perseverance, a strong arm, and a meditative mind. I’m very excited about the results, and I just love it!
